A Boeing Co. 777 aircraft from Rossiya Airlines made an emergency landing in Moscow at 04:44 local time due to engine problems, less than a week after a similar plane flew United Airlines Holdings Inc. suffered from a dramatic eruption over Denver, dumping debris on the neighborhoods below.

The Rossiya Air flight operated as a cargo service from Hong Kong to Madrid, according to a Sheremetyevo International Airport employee who declined to be namedNeither Boeing nor Rossiya Air were immediately available for comment.

The plane’s crew requested an emergency landing after one of the left engine control channels failed, Interfax said. No injuries were reported. The type of engine was not immediately clear.

Last Saturday’s incident in Colorado involved a PW4077 engine made by Pratt & Whitney, a division of Raytheon Technologies Corp. A preliminary examination of fragments of the engine suggested that a crack that grew gradually over time was causing the malfunction. The incident led to all Boeing 777s around the world using the engine being grounded.

In another incident on 20 February, a Boeing 747-400 cargo plane from Longtail Aviation suffered a malfunction with its Pratt & Whitney engine shortly after take-off from Maastricht in the Netherlands. That failure was under control, which meant that debris did not escape laterally and damage the fuselage of the plane, but two people on the ground were injured. The engine was from the same PW4000 family as the United flight.
