Bobby Brown shared the series of tragedies he experienced – the deaths of son Bobby Brown Jr., daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown and ex-wife Whitney Houston – as well as his addiction on Wednesday Red Table Talk
The 52-year-old singer said he “absolutely” believes Nick Gordon was responsible for the deaths of Houston and Bobbi Kristina, who died in eerily similar circumstances in 2012 and 2015 respectively. He thinks Gordon, who was held responsible for the deaths of Bobbi Kristina, drugged mother and daughter, noting that he was with every woman when they drowned. Gordon died of a heroin overdose in 2020.
The New Edition frontman said there was “absolutely” foul play regarding Bobbi K.’s death and thinks Gordon “definitely” drugged her. She had several narcotics and prescription drugs in her body when she went underwater in a bathtub, which led to brain damage that left her in a coma for nearly six months before she died.
“He was the only one out there with both situations – with my ex-wife and with my daughter – and they both died the same way,” Bobby said.
RTTWillow Smith asked if he meant that Gordon was also responsible for Houston’s death, Bobby said, “ I believe so, ” of that bathtub drowning, with the consequences of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use as contributing factors, in the Beverly Hilton. “This is my opinion of who I think this young man was,” Bobby went on. “Being around my daughter and around my ex-wife, I think he was more of a party favors.”
Gordon has never been criminally charged for the death of Bobbi Kristina. No charges have been filed for Houston’s death either.
Bobby said he could never confront Gordon, noting that he was in rehab to treat his alcoholism when Gordon died in a Florida hotel room. He said that Bobbi, who died at the age of 22, was in an abusive relationship and dealing with drug addiction at the time of her death – and generally felt in a bad place without her mother. One of Bobbi and Gordon’s roommates at their Atlanta home testified in Gordon’s trial that Gordon kicked Bobbi and hit one of her teeth days before she died. He said his daughter didn’t confide in him about abuse, but he thinks she did. Bobbi had booked a flight to see him in LA and it was scheduled for two days after she was found in the tub.
Bobby also spoke of the death of son Bobby Brown Jr., who died in November at the age of 28. The autopsy revealed that he had taken an overdose of fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol. Bobby said Bobby Jr. was different from Bobbi’s because, “He wasn’t a user. He experimented with different things. It wasn’t like he was dependent on drugs – like my situation,” since Bobby is sober. of drugs for 19 years. ‘I depended on it, I needed it. He was a young man trying the wrong thing and it took him out of here. ‘
Bobby acknowledged the role his addictions contributed to the death of his “babies.” He talked about his own upbringing, the son of alcoholic parents, seeing people drinking and using drugs around him. His marriage to Houston, from 1992 to 2007, reflected that in a pattern of generational abuse.
He said his long history of drug and alcohol abuse led Bobby Jr., whose mother was Bobby’s ex-girlfriend Kim Ward, to feel like he could “test” substances and admitted, “I feel guilty about that. . ” Ditto Bobbi, whom he said ‘saw things wrong firsthand’ as he and Houston famously battled their dependencies. ‘It messed things up and she ended up stuck in an assault with a man – a boy, I should say – [who] in fact it controlled her to the point where her life was taken, ”he said.
He also spoke about his fleeting marriage to Houston and acknowledged that there was alcohol and substance abuse, which he said resulted in verbal abuse.
“We fought hard verbally – and we loved it even more,” he said of their marriage. “Our love was strong for each other … We just got entangled and that had nothing to do with how we felt about each other. The love was always there. We tried so hard. As a couple we struggled really hard to clean for ourselves . I got clean long before she did. We were already divorced. She was a strong woman. She fought very hard to save her own life. I had strength enough for myself then. Being addicted, I had to save myself … Unfortunately, we grew apart as I tried to find myself. ”
It was reiterated that he had not introduced Houston to drugs, as he had long been blamed for it. Houston’s brother Michael has said so, and Bobby saw Houston use cocaine for the first time on their wedding day.
“I’m not looking at the finger pointing,” he said. ‘We did it together. It’s not that I started with her or she with me. Drugs is a bad thing. You get caught up in it. Once you get caught up in it, it’s unstoppable. ‘
While Bobby stopped taking drugs 19 years ago, he continued to drink and it caught up with him in 2019.
“I started to lose my bodily function,” he said. “My body started to shut down.” He said he no longer got drunk from consuming alcohol, it became a situation where “I needed it to wake up. I needed to stop the shakes, to function on a daily basis.”
He added, “I couldn’t accept going to the bathroom myself,” noting that he had done so in front of the young children he shares with wife Alicia Etheredge-Brown. Committed to the 12-step program, “I’m going to sleep now, I’m not passing out … My whole feeling about life has changed.”
Bobby – now a grandfather of two – said he realized, “If I don’t break this cycle of generational abuse,” who will? I must give them reason to live clean. If I’m not right, nothing else goes right. “
He admitted, “I got a second, third, and fourth chance in life.”
