Jets fans may be counting the seconds until Adam Gase is no longer the head coach, but Bill Belichick doesn’t think there is anyone better for the job at Florham Park.
Leading up to Sunday’s game with the Jets, the longtime Patriots coach asked questions about the team he worked for just before coming to New England, as well as quarterback Sam Darnold. Belichick disclosed how highly he thought of Darnold, who seemingly declined in his second and third NFL seasons, and that he doesn’t think the QB could be in better hands.
“I don’t think anyone can coach him better than where he is,” he told reporters on Wednesday.
Gase, who is 9-22 for two seasons with the Jets entering Sunday’s game, admitted earlier this month that he believes Darnold’s struggles lie on him and the coaching staff. It is widely believed that Sunday’s regular season finale will be Gase’s last game with the Jets.
In eleven games this season, Darnold has scored just eight touchdown passes with nine interceptions. He missed four games this season due to a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder.
“I don’t think there is a shortage of talent or playing skills,” Belichick said of Darnold. “… He’s an athletic man of great size, a big arm, hard to tackle in the pocket, good prospects and he gets well-coached.”
