Biden’s government wants to close the Guantanamo detention facility

The Biden administration wants to close the controversial Guantanamo Bay detention facility by the end of his term, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Friday.

During her daily newsletter, Psaki said the government had initiated a process with the National Security Council to investigate steps towards closing the facility. She said it is “certainly our purpose and intent” to close the controversial prison, which was a priority for former President Barack Obama that he could not fulfill.

Psaki said several under-cabinet policy roles have yet to be fulfilled as the administration continues with the effort. The pressure to close the facility would be a “robust process between the different agencies,” Psaki said.
