Biden says Trump has “no need” for intelligence briefings

President Joe Biden said he does not think former President Trump should continue to receive intelligence briefings, which Mr Biden as the commander in chief should do as he sees fit. Norah O’Donnell, anchor and editor-in-chief of the CBS Evening News, spoke to Mr. Biden in the first network news interview he’s delivered since his inauguration. It airs in the 4:00 pm preceding the Super Bowl on Sunday.

“Well, let me ask you something that you supervise as president,” said O’Donnell. “Should Former President Trump Still Receive Intelligence Briefings?”

Former presidents often have the option of receiving intelligence briefings as a courtesy.

“I don’t think so,” Mr. Biden replied.

“Why not?” O’Donnell asked.

“Because of his erratic behavior that has nothing to do with the rebellion,” Mr. Biden said.

The president did not address his concerns about what could happen if Mr Trump continues to receive the briefings, but wondered what value that might add to the country.

“I’d rather not speculate out loud,” said Mr. Biden. “I just think he doesn’t need the intelligence briefings. What is the value of giving him an intelligence briefing? What impact does he have at all, other than the fact that he might slip and say something? ‘

Earlier this week, Mr Biden said he hoped to work with Republicans on a COVID-19 economic emergency plan, but said on Friday he wanted to act quickly. Mr. Biden told O’Donnell that he will not give in to the amount of the $ 1,400 incentive checks, but he is willing to negotiate who qualifies for the checks and whether a minimum wage increase of up to $ 15 an hour is included.

He said he does not believe an increase in the minimum wage will ultimately meet the US bailout.

The president said the $ 15 minimum wage apparently “will not occur because of US Senate rules.”

“I put it in, but I don’t think it will survive,” added Mr. Biden.

Instead, the president said he is willing to work on a standalone $ 15 minimum wage proposal.

“I suspect it won’t be there,” the president said of the nationwide hourly increase included in the American rescue plan. “But I do think we need to have a minimum wage, stand on its own, $ 15 an hour and make our way to the – it doesn’t have to be a boom. And all economics shows, if you do, the whole economy is on the rise. I am willing, as president of the United States on a separate minimum wage negotiation, to work my way up from what it is today, namely – look, no one should work 40 hours a week and live under poverty And if you earn less than $ 15 an hour, you live below the poverty wage. “

The full interview will air on Sundays during the 4:00 PM ET hour prior to the Super Bowl, only on CBS.
