The humanitarian organization Children in Need of Defense (KIND, for its acronym in English) urged President-elect Joe Biden on Thursday to take measures in his first 100 days of government to allow unaccompanied minor immigrants entering the country to the protection afforded by immigration law.
Wendy Young, president of KIND, urged the incoming Democratic government on Thursday to reverse President Donald Trump’s policies that violate the rights of asylum seekers and refugee applicants and have caused great damage in this community, especially in the children.
The activist has called for the changes to be enacted in the first 100 days of the new government, which will take effect January 20.
Jennifer Podkul, vice president of KIND, explained at a press conference that there are at least three critical issues on which the new administration is urged to take immediate action. First of all, the Biden’s government to ensure that unaccompanied children are not expelled and that they have a fair chance to seek protection in the United States.
In addition, Podkul assures that in order to try to repair the damage caused by the Republican government, the new executive branch would need to increase its resources so that unaccompanied minors have legal representation.
Young, for his part, warned that these proposals are only a small step to repair the outgoing government’s damage.
The activist pointed out that evidence of the seriousness is the report of Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz, who assures that the Trump administration failed to consider the impact that its “zero tolerance” policy would have. when it would separate thousands of their families. of migrant children.
“The Department of Justice’s determined focus on more prosecutions came at the expense of a careful and proper consideration of the impact that the persecution of family-based adults and divorce would have on the accompanying children and on the government’s capacity to keep the children. later reunite with their parents, ”the report said.
The activists urged the new administration to create a task force dedicated to reuniting separated families under the Trump administration.
