President Biden told CBS’s Norah O’Donnell in a new interview that reading excerpts from his son Hunter’s upcoming memoirs “gave me hope.”
“ The honesty with which he came forward and spoke about the problem … it gave me hope to read it, ” said the president, who became audibly emotional as he spoke of his son’s struggle with substance abuse.
“It was like my boy was back,” he added.
“The honesty with which he stepped forward and talked about the problem,” Pres. Speaking of his son Hunter’s memoir of his struggles with addiction, Biden says, “It gave me hope.”

The president made the comments in an interview airing Sunday ahead of the Super Bowl, his first TV network interview since taking office.

“My son, like many people, like many people you know at home, had a drug problem,” Joe Biden responded at the time. “He caught up, he fixed it, he worked on it, and I’m proud of him.”
The president made a similar note in his interview with O’Donnell, describing his son’s addiction struggles for many Americans.
“You know, I bet there isn’t a family that you know doesn’t have someone in the family with a drug problem or an alcohol problem,” he said.
Hunter Biden’s memoir, “Beautiful Things,” will be released in April and is expected to fairly address his drug use.
Hunter Biden confirmed late last year that the American law firm in Delaware was investigating his tax cases. Reports indicate that the investigation is focusing on his foreign business dealings, which were the target of former President Trump’s attacks during the campaign.
Hunter Biden is the president’s only living son. His other son, Beau Biden, died in 2015 after a battle with brain cancer.
