Forty-six percent said they like how Biden behaves in the job, compared with 27 percent who don’t, and 44 percent of respondents said they believe Biden has changed the tone of the political debate for the better, compared with 29 percent saying he has made it worse.

According to the poll, Biden still faces challenges on some policy fronts. The number of Democrats and Republicans who believe illegal immigration is a major problem has both increased since a year ago as Biden grapples with an increase in migrants on the southern border.

The Pew poll surveyed 5,109 adults April 5-11, days before the Biden administration recommended discontinuing use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The poll has a margin of error of 2.1 percentage points.

Public opinion polls during Biden’s early months in office have generally found that the public gives him high marks on his handling of the pandemic and his overall approval score.
