The Chicago Bears made a leap of faith in free agency with the signing of quarterback Andy Dalton for a one-year deal worth $ 10 million. It wasn’t the splash many hoped for after rumors of a possible exchange for Russell Wilson dominated the headlines for a few weeks.
While Chicago’s bid for Wilson was cut off – for now – the Bears are not making this off-season in the quarterback position. Many expect Chicago to tackle quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft, and some even believe the Bears could trade in an effort to get one of the top five potential clients in the draft.
According to Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears appear to be doing their research on the Day 2 quarterbacks in next month’s NFL draft.
But according to a league source, the Bears also did significant homework on the quarterback outlook on Day 2, hoping that the detailed and concerted evaluations of Pace, Nagy and their respective staff can identify potential long-term difference makers.
Those quarterbacks on Day 2 included Kyle Trask from Florida, Kellen Mond from Texas A&M, Jamie Newman from Georgia, and Notre Dame’s Ian Book.
Considering Chicago has many needs in design – now including cornerback after Kyle Fuller’s shocking release – it makes sense for the Bears to explore some development options on Day 2, as those top five quarterbacks should soon disappear from the board.
Wiederer also noted, as Adam Schefter has, that Chicago has not exactly given up on Wilson’s possible landing in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks.
