Bears continue to explore quarterback options, including Carson Wentz

It’s been a quarterback-heavy off-season for the NFL thus far, which has included rumors of trades or actual trades with major quarterbacks, including Deshaun Watson and Matthew Stafford.

The newest quarterback in the spotlight is Carson Wentz in Philadelphia, who is expected to be traded shortly after a falling out. And, as you might expect, the Chicago Bears have been involved in all of those discussions. That’s what happens when your general manager and head coach has another year to solve a decades-long quarterback problem with this franchise.

Rumors circulate about the Bears and Wentz that it’s hard to know what to believe. But that much is true, according to reliable sources from around the league – the Bears are very interested in trading for Wentz.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo emphasized the same, although he was also quick to point out that a transaction doesn’t seem imminent. Garafolo said the Eagles and the two leading candidates for Wentz in the Bears and Indianapolis Colts all “play poker.” Essentially, Philadelphia is waiting for an offer they like, while Chicago and Indianapolis are exploring their options.

The Bears recently promoted quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo to game coordinator, which almost feels like a prelude to Wentz’s possible landing in Chicago. DeFilippo coached Wentz for his first two seasons in the league, including his MVP run in 2017.

It’s no coincidence that the Bears and Colts are the two teams that show the most interest, as they each have a coach who worked with Wentz during his impressive second season in DeFilippo and Colts head coach Frank Reich.

While the Bears, like the rest of the league, hope the Houston Texans give in and trade Watson, that’s a dream right now. So, with the limited options and the 20th overall choice, Wentz could be the best option right now – at the right price, of course.
