Barricaded situation in Royal Oak ends, 34-year-old suspected gunman shot by police

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – A barricaded gunman situation in Royal Oak ended Saturday night when the suspected gunman was shot by police and rushed to a hospital.

According to authorities, police responded to a report of a domestic dispute between a father and his adult son at a house in the 2700 block of Oliver Road at approximately 2:00 PM. Police said the 34-year-old son was drunk and assaulted his father, who called 911.

Neighbors said the man was a former military man and was suspected of having post-traumatic stress disorder when he attacked his father.

Police added that he was heavily armed, wearing body armor, and barricaded himself at the Royal Oak residence.

Police said they contacted the son by phone and tried repeatedly to persuade him to surrender peacefully. Police said they could hear gunshots from the house and the suspect threatened to shoot officers.

Police put up a perimeter and urged the area – on Galpin and Glenview avenues and Oliver and Glenwood roads – to take shelter in place, stay clear of windows and take cover if possible. search in cellars.

Police said at approximately 4 p.m. that the Oakland County SWAT team arrived, took over the situation, and negotiated further with the man inside.

After about two and a half hours without contact, police said they used a SWAT robot and drone to break through the door and search the house.

Authorities said communication with the suspected shooter was restored after the drone was shut down.

“There was a lady on the police force who was talking to Jason. She said, ‘Jason, come out with your hands up,” said neighbor Ted Boiteau.

“That’s what it sounded like,” said Carol Boiteau.

“She tried to talk him out,” said Ted Boiteau. “This went on for a long time and while she was talking we heard a gunshot.”

“And then everything was quiet,” said Carol Boiteau.

The gunshot came from the police at 8:28 pm

Authorities say the suspected gunman came out of the house around 8:30 p.m., pointed a rifle at law enforcement officers, and a member of the SWAT team shot him.

Police said that deputies and the Royal Oak Fire Department were providing assistance to the man and he was rushed to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.

As of 10 p.m., the suspected shooter was still alive in the hospital. His parents are expected to be fine.
