Australian Open Nick Kyrgios is aiming for team box in the first round

It didn’t take long – only two games really – but Nick Kyrgios was back at his spiky best at the John Cain Arena at the Australian Open on Monday night. [AEDT].

After a 0-2 break in the first set against the Portuguese Frederico Ferreira Silva, Kyrgios turned his attention to his player’s box and exclaimed: “Tell your girlfriend to get out of my box!”

It is unclear exactly who he was referring to, but it turned out to be the catalyst for a quick turnaround in fortunes; Kyrgios quickly broke back and leveled the match 2-2, then muttered softly, “Wonder why?”

From then on, the Australian was well on his way to taking a 5-4 lead in the set before stopping the proceedings again, this time berating a member of the crowd for speaking between his opponent’s first and second serve.

“Be quiet, man, have some respect for the boy,” Kyrgios said.

He approached the chair umpire after the game and loudly asked if he was going to do anything about it.

Kyrgios took the first set 6-4 and was rarely bothered by the rest of his encounter, offering himself some advice from time to time, and at one point asked his opponent for an unused towel during a halftime change.

Kyrgios finished the match 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, but said he was far from playing his best tennis.

“To be honest, it was pretty average. I haven’t played a Grand Slam game in over a year. I was nervous,” he said on track after the win.

“(But) it was special; I appreciate it [the crowd for] get out. It was a strange year and we all overcame it together to make it happen. It felt normal, to be honest, it was good to see [the crowd was] being driven crazy”

Kyrgios faces Frenchman Ugo Humbert in the second round.
