The unseeded Australian left the crowd in rapture as he won the second set not only in style but with a forearm ace.
Chris Bradnam, on commentary for Eurosport, stated, “It happened!” When Thiem was unable to respond to the forearm rest that left him in the spot.
“The forearm bait secures the set! Thiem has a mountain to climb,” roared Bradnam.
It had to happen one day, it happened today!
‘It has happened!’ Kyrgios aces Thiem with forearm to win the second set in style
It wasn’t the first time 25-year-old Thiem had outwitted Thiem in an all-encompassing way in the match, beating him with a different forearm serve earlier in the set, much to the disbelief of his opponent and the fans.
To Thiem’s credit, he responded to a cheeky fake of Kyrgios to try one more forearm to serve in the perfect way on the next point, while destroying an emphatic winner.
