The Dominican Republic will become a manufacturer of tablets and laptops to meet the needs of the education sector, after the government yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding with Encore Repair Services company, a pact described by President Luis Abinader as transcendental to online learning. .
Accompanied by the Vice President, Raquel Peña, Abinader led the ceremony in the Las Cariátides room of the Government House, where the Dominican state, through Santo Domingo’s Cybernetic Park, the Manufacturing Program in the DR: After-Sales Services or electronic devices for the education sector ”.
The initiative includes the in-country manufacturing of electronic tablets, laptops (laptops) and portable electronic notebooks (netbooks).
End the digital divide
Abinader said the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding aims to close the existing digital divide across the country.
He said the programs that the government is developing at the technology level also aim to ensure that all young people have access to technology.
“Most importantly, we have already signed a maintenance agreement so that if any of these tablets are damaged, there is a place to fix them in the country and they will not be lost,” added the head of state at the event. .
He defined the signing of the memorandum as something extraordinary, as the free zone industries are moving to another level and there will be good competition in terms of prices and quality.
Giant steps
Education Minister Roberto Fulcar said the current government has taken gigantic steps to finally get the country out of the so-called digital divide.
Fulcar reported that as part of this work, the government has already provided 117,000 laptops to teachers and about 495,000 to students.
More than 500 jobs will be created with the launch of the project.
