This is the season for snowy weather, holiday parties and drunken Vikings. The latest update for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla adds a new holiday themed event to the game and covers your settlement in the snow. But while the new free update is a bit of festive fun, adding new armor and decorations, it also has some nasty bugs.

The biggest and most notable change from the update is that your settlement, Ravensthorpe, is now covered in beautiful snow and Christmas decorations. And some local partygoers helped set up a big event with singing, drinking, competitions and much more drinking. After all, we are still Vikings. So the next time you boot Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and return to your settlement, you will receive a number of new missions related to the event.

Some of them involve helping set up the celebration, while others let you participate in the actual party events.

For example, you need to visit your brewery and find a missing barrel of special holiday med. In another search, I had to track down cattle that escaped after the man looking at them was startled by one of the cows. These cattle were meant to be slaughtered and served at the party, so to save the day you have to take the man and track down these missing cows to save Chri… I mean, The Yule Festival.

Back at the party, you will find some quests that, as far as I know, are repeatable. There is a new archery competition to enter, a drinking competition as you would expect, and a big fighting tournament where you get more and more drunk as you compete. None of these quests or events are incredibly complex or connected to the main storyline of Walhalla, but that’s fine. I’m not looking for a major DLC at this point after putting 100 hours into the base game. I just want to have some fun and enjoy the season with my Viking friends.

Completing all of these missions will earn you Yule Tokens that can be spent in the newly built Festival Shop. Inside you will find Christmas decorations for your settlement, such as a cozy campfire. There are also a number of new armor and weapons, all part of the Mōdraniht set. Personally, none of the armor or weapons seem better than the endgame I’m rocking, but I’ll still save some tokens to buy this stuff as it won’t be around until January 7th. However, if you want it all, be prepared to grind up some of the repeatable events a bit.

Unfortunately, while enjoying the snowy settlement, decorations and new quests, I was disappointed by the buggies of all this content. Many quests had markers floating far away in any part of the map. I was only able to finish the missing barrel or fellow quest thanks to someone who posted a tweet with the actually outlet location. Other quests continued as usual. For example, the archery competition wouldn’t count any of the hits or misses towards my score. When I tried again later it worked so maybe the lady organizing the contest had one cup too much of the special mead I brought.

Hopefully these issues will be resolved soon and in the future Assassin’s Creed Valhalla events are launched in a more stable state. As a big fan of holiday themed events in video games, this is a good one if it works. For now, if you’re interested in some new armor or want to attend a big holiday party digitally, the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Yule Season event will be live on all platforms until January 7th.
