Asian woman assaulted in Midtown in possible hate crime

An Asian woman was randomly attacked in Manhattan on Sunday afternoon in a possible hate crime attack, police and sources said.

The 41-year-old victim was grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground as she walked along West 31st Street near Sixth Avenue at approximately 1:00 PM, police said.

The suspect, a 37-year-old woman, yelled something in Spanish at the victim during the attack, according to police sources.

The victim put police down and later helped them locate her attacker near the crime crossroads, the sources said.

Police said they have taken the suspect into custody and are investigating the incident as a possible bias crime. As of late Sunday, no charges have been filed.

The Big Apple is experiencing a wave of attacks against people of Asian descent. There were 28 such racially motivated attacks last year, compared to just two in 2019.
