Ashley Judd tries to stay optimistic as she ‘drowns in trauma’ after a broken leg in Congo

Ashley Judd has had a shocking experience since breaking her leg in the Democratic Republic of Congo last month.

But the two-time Golden Globe nominee is now recovering at home, surrounded by the support of friends and family.

She remains optimistic as she ‘drowns in trauma’ from the painful experience and took to Instagram Saturday with an update on how she’s recovering for her 497,000 followers.

The 52-year-old actress began the caption with the Zen proverb: ‘When I understand, things are just the way they are. If I don’t understand, things are the way they are. ‘

She continued: ‘I don’t understand why what happened happened. I really understand how much I was loved and helped. I understand that nights are a savage pain. ‘

Ashley thanked her doctors Phil Kregor and Todd A Rubin for “seven hours of intensive, brilliant, inspired surgical work on my bones and nerve.”

She also showed her appreciation for the nurses, nutritionists, and janitors who took care of her during her hospitalization.

The Double Jeopardy star wrote: “Now I find myself in the bosom of a stream of friends and family, too numerous to name, who have caught me in their gentle arms from this steep fall.

They do for me what I cannot do for myself – prepare meals, shampoo my hair, and they also provide the deep spiritual guidance and comfort to try to create an arc of meaning and purpose. They also provide and fulfill my need for rest. I am lost and they are my shepherd’s crook.

‘To all those who preceded me and walked next to me with physiotherapy, I had no idea. Thank you. I am only at the beginning and the combination of drowning in trauma and addressing the physical body is a lot. Yet you did, and so did I. ‘

She posted the caption with a photo of herself and her niece Rachel Sager under a beautiful mosaic piece entitled Truthseeker, which Rachel created, inspired by Ashley.

Ashley broke her leg in four places last month and suffered nerve damage after tripping over a tree in the dark while tracking down bonobos, an endangered species of monkey.

The Divergent actress was transported to a hospital in South Africa after a 55-hour rescue mission, before returning to the United States and undergoing surgery.
