Arson suspect taken into custody after deadlock, high-speed chase ends in Paramount

PARAMOUNT, Calif. (KABC) – An arson suspect was involved in a dramatic standoff with sheriff’s deputies Thursday morning after a high-speed chase ended on a residential street in Paramount, authorities said.

The chase began shortly before 8am in Compton and later came to a stop on San Jose Avenue and Somerset Boulevard, where several patrol vehicles lined up behind the suspect’s car.

The man was suspected of a possible attempt to set his home on fire after he received an eviction notice, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.

Smoke emerged from the vehicle after deputies apparently fired fewer than lethal rounds. At least one of the car’s windows had been shattered, causing glass to fall into the street.

About 30 minutes after the deadlock, a small flame was visible in the vehicle. Deputies approached the passenger side and deployed a fire extinguisher, injected a large cloud of retardant, and then retreated.

The suspect, who was also wanted on suspicion of waving a weapon, stayed in the car but moved to the back seat.

Authorities later called three armored vehicles to the scene, which surrounded the driver’s two-door vehicle as the stalemate continues.

Several houses had to be evacuated.

The standoff lasted hours before authorities took the suspect into custody at around 11 a.m.
