Arctic cold front approaches; Monday blizzard update

DETROIT – An Arctic cold front is approaching the area early this morning.

At the time of writing this article, (Friday 4am), temperatures ahead of the front are in the low to mid 30s (0 to 1 degree Celsius) and temperatures behind the front have already dropped to 20 degrees ( -7 degrees Celsius) at Houghton Lake.

Once the front is over, our temperatures will drop to the mid-20s (-4 to -3 degrees Celsius) and remain almost stable there for the rest of the day. However, a gusty northwest wind of 10 to 20 mph keeps the teenage chills far down (-11 degrees Celsius).

There are some snow showers accompanying the front, but I don’t expect any build-up for most of us – maybe a dusting in the thumb.

Today’s sunrise is at 7.55 am and today’s sunset is at 5:35 pm

Friday nights will be mostly clear, and it will be our coldest night of the winter season so far, with lows in the low teens (-11 degrees Celsius).

Saturday looks like a fantastic day to hit the slopes if you are a skier or snowboarder! We have mostly sunny skies in the morning, and then some high clouds come in during the afternoon. Highs in the upper 20s (-2 degrees Celsius) won’t be that hard to take if we can maintain that sunshine. Oh, and the wind will be below 10 mph too!

Cloud cover will increase on Saturday evening, with lows near 20 degrees (-7 degrees Celsius).

Light snow develops on Sundays, and this doesn’t seem to be a major problem – an accumulation of an inch or less (probably less). Peaks close to 30 degrees (-1 degrees Celsius).

I’m starting to see a bit of a trend towards a more general fix in the overnight computer modeling, and our Monday storm is now more like a Monday night storm.

I think Monday will be dry for most of the day, with maybe some snow developing late in the day near the state line.

While there are still some minor differences in the models that make a BIG difference in our forecast, it looks like the snow is going to tip north on Monday evening. The best chance to see a few inches of accumulation is between M-59 / Hall Road and the state line. Certainly, the further south in our area you are, the more likely you are to see some impressive snow.

Obviously, it’s impossible for me to get specific about snow amounts so far in advance – especially in a situation like this storm (a sharp cut off in the snow on the northern edge). But overall, this appears to be a scenario where the inch comes only an inch or two while amounts near the state line can approach five or six inches.

Again, this is PROVISIONAL and is subject to change. Fortunately, with the Monday night timing, Brandon and I should be able to talk to you very specifically on Local 4 News Today Monday morning, as well as on ClickOnDetroit.com and our app.
