On a new exclusive, trustworthy Korean site, ET News has revealed that the super-smooth 120Hz ProMotion displays that were touch & go for the iPhone 12 series will now come to the iPhone 13 series. But only for the most expensive models.

ET News explains that ProMotion will be limited to the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max because Apple will not put expensive LTPO (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) panels on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini. LTPO panels compensate for the high 120 Hz battery consumption by enabling dynamic refresh rates of just 1 Hz for tasks such as reading email and browsing the web.

The problem with this is that the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini are not going to be cheap phones. Through stealth cuts, Apple quietly raised the iPhone 12 price to $ 870 for the same package as the $ 699 iPhone 11 and this puts it in a price bracket where almost all Android rivals already have 120Hz panels. The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, in particular, has a 120Hz panel and costs just $ 699.

Yes, given what we already know about the highly anticipated design changes, 5G enhancements, increased storage and security upgrades of the iPhone 13, the omission of ProMotion could be something buyers might overlook. That said, given the price hikes Apple is pushing across the board today, the argument that fans need to compromise on the features usually offered by rivals is getting harder to swallow.
