(Reuters) – Dan Riccio, Apple Inc’s chief of hardware engineering, will step down to oversee a new project, the iPhone maker said Monday, giving few details about the old manager’s latest position.

Riccio will report to Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook, Apple said in a statement. He will be replaced by company veteran John Ternus, who will join the executive team as senior vice president of hardware engineering.

Riccio, who joined Apple more than two decades ago as vice president of product design, was named vice president of iPad hardware engineering in 2010 and leads the engineering teams for Mac, iPhone, iPad and iPod.

The company has focused on newer projects and made strides in self-driving car technology, with the goal of producing a passenger car by 2024 that could contain its own breakthrough battery technology, Reuters reported last month. (reut.rs/3oimk75)
