Apple’s latest software update fixes an issue that the company said affected some older MacBook Pro models.

Users currently running Big Sur on their computers should now see the macOS Big Sur 11.2.1 update when they go to the Software Update section of their system preferences. The update’s description specifically states that it “fixes an issue that could prevent the battery from charging in some 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro models,” although Apple apparently has some security updates also.

macOS Big Sur 11.2 rolled out last week with a many updates and bug fixes. Among them, the update resolved Bluetooth connectivity issues, resolved an administrator access issue with System Preferences, and fixed an issue with Mac minis connecting to external displays using an HDMI to DVI converter.

Aside from the charging issue on some MacBook Pro models patched today, but related to MacBook Pro charging in general, there have been some interesting charging rumors recently on the next generation of Pro laptops that make us feel hopeful. Both Bloomberg and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo have suggested that the company plans to release two MacBook Pro models in 14- and 16-inch screen sizes that would leave the USB-C charging standard of years past for a return to MagSafe charging ports.

As much as I love the USB-C standard – lots of gadgets, one cord – I can’t help but feel hopeful about a possible future where I don’t crash my laptop to the floor every time I trip over the charging cord.
