Apple Leak unveils new iPhone 13 design

Apple’s iPhone 12 range appears to be breaking sales records, despite a longer list of launch issues. But now an exclusive new iPhone leak is revealing the design change everyone wants next year.

Notable is DigiTimes, which reports that Apple will finally be able to reduce the notch in the iPhone 13, while simultaneously upgrading both the front and rear cameras with Pro-level improvements across the range.

According to the report, two breakthroughs are key to the smaller notch. The first is that Apple has managed to shrink Face ID’s sensors significantly. The second is a sleek VCSEL chip in the front camera, which both reduces volume and adds enhanced depth-sensing capabilities – a boon for portrait mode selfies.

DigiTimes moves to the back of the iPhone 13 and also states that Apple is working with US-based II-VI to manufacture VCSEL chips for Time-of-Flight (ToF) LiDAR scanners, with all four iPhone 13- models these formerly Pro-only will get feature next year. Presumably, the space Apple saved internally from the front camera and the changes to Face ID is what allows the iPhone 13 Mini to step up this step and take the iPhone 13 (which matches the functionality) for the ride.

It’s worth noting that Digitimes has a mixed track record, but has also broken some major exclusives in recent months.

Plus, if Digitimes is on the money with its latest report, the case for the iPhone 13 is already compelling. Industry leaks have revealed next-generation 5G efficiency (which should have a major effect on battery life), doubled storage, LPTO panels (allowing 120Hz ProMotion displays), the return of Touch ID alongside Face ID (for a mask age) and what has been labeled the biggest Wi-Fi upgrade in 20 years.

But for many, it’s the smaller notch that just might be the icing on the cake.
