Apple is trying to limit offensive AirTag engravings … with mixed results

Apple’s AirTag item trackers can be custom engraved with text, numbers, and even emoji, but users looking to express some college humor will likely have to look elsewhere as Apple’s online AirTag personalization tool is easily offended.

An AirTag is just big enough for up to four characters or up to three emojis. That may seem just enough to get questionably creative with your diction, but so The edge points out that Apple has pretty strict limits on what you can symbolize on an AirTag.

For example, an emoji from a pile of poo can’t get behind a horse face emoji, but other combinations of animal poo are fair game. Similar restrictions apply to potentially offensive words spelled with text, although some customers will certainly find their own way around the system.

This isn’t the first time Apple has cut the wings of aspiring comedians and toilet humorists – many of the same emoji restrictions apply to AirPods and iPad carvings, for example. However, the ability to engrave different, cheaper AirTags is likely to introduce more people to Apple’s guarded funny side.
