Anyone 18 or older who appeared on the FEMA site in Florida City was given a COVID-19 admission, not even eligible

FLORIDA CITY, Fla. – On Saturday, anyone who was 18 or older with a doctor’s note or not, who did or did not meet the admission requirements, could get a COVID-19 admission at a FEMA location in Florida City.

It’s unclear why workers fired shots into the arms of someone 18 and older, but it may be that there has been little demand at the site for the past week. However, Governor Ron DeSantis’s order mandates that recipients in that age group must be in a high-risk category and arrive with a doctor’s certificate or a doctor-signed admission form.

The news quickly spread on social media about the Florida City shots-for-all, leading to lines of people on Sunday hoping to have a shot at the Youth Activity Center.

Saima Haque said a tweet prompted her to drive nearly 100 miles from Boynton Beach in hopes of getting the photo.

“I saw a tweet on Twitter about people over 18 years old. They were handing out yesterday and today they would. My dad at home is sick, so we’re just trying to get it, ”Haque said. “If it doesn’t work, there’s not much we can do,” she said.

It did not work. In fact, operators at the FEMA site reverted to the governor’s order as soon as the site reopened on Sunday morning.

Florida City police were on hand to control the crowd and deliver the message. Many people who did not meet the requirements were rejected.

The back-and-forth at the Florida City site prompted the mayor of Miami-Dade to issue a tweet addressed to the governor urging him to expand admission requirements.

“Our top priority must be to get weapons in the arms as soon as possible and to ensure that no available vaccine stockpile goes unused. I urge the Governor to expand eligibility requirements to meet the high demand in our community and across the state. “
