Angelina Jolie says a ‘change in my family situation’ has led me to take on more acting roles

Angelina Jolie has stated that she has stepped back from directing to acting because of ‘a change in her family situation’.

After establishing herself as one of the most profitable box office stars in the early 2000s, she devoted the 2010s largely to directing, though she has now insisted that an ongoing quest for directing has become ‘impossible’ .

The star made her directorial debut in 2011’s In the Land of Blood and Honey, followed by 2014’s Unbroken, By the Sea in 2015 and First They Killed My Father in 2017.

While she hasn’t specifically stated what the “ change ” is, Angelina, 45, has been engaged in a lengthy custody battle with ex-husband Brad Pitt since 2016, following their split after more than a decade together and more than two years of marriage.

When asked about her shift to acting in favor of directing, Angelina said the move was due to her family, but directing is still a passion for her.

She said candidly to Entertainment Weekly, ‘I love to direct, but I’ve had a change in my family situation that has prevented me from directing for the past few years.

‘I just had to do shorter jobs and be at home more, so I went back to doing a few acting jobs. That’s really the truth. ‘

Angelina and Brad have been at war over their children for five years, Brad is aiming for 50/50 custody, while Angelina wants full physical custody.

They announced their split in 2016 and were legally divorced in 2019, but things are far from amicable between the couple as she continues to accuse abuse.

She has six children, three of whom – Maddox, 19, Pax, 17, and Zahara, 16 – were adopted, and three with Brad – Shiloh, 14, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 12.

Since the children Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne are underage, Brad and Angelina should both give permission to testify, but Maddox, Zahara and Pax are all over 18 and so would be free to make statements.

The By the Sea filmmaker previously admitted that she thinks she lacks the skills to be a traditional stay-at-home parent.

She said in February, “I was never very good at sitting still. I feel like I don’t have all the skills to be a traditional stay-at-home mom.

Even though I wanted to have a lot of kids and be a mother, I’ve always imagined it a bit like Jane Goodall, traveling somewhere in the middle of the jungle. I had not imagined it in that true, traditional sense. ‘

The actress has two live action movies out this year – the first time that has happened for her since 2010, when she had Salt and The Tourist.

The Who Wish Me Dead debuts in theaters on May 14 and on HBO Max, with her highly anticipated debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Eternals on November 5.

Angelina’s new movie First They Killed My Father also marks her return to stunt work, adding how much she admired the voice of writer-director (and former actor) Taylor Sheridan, who drew her to the movies.

She said, “He has a unique voice when it comes to characters in America that I wasn’t focused on before. I wanted to be with him in this world.

She added that her experience as a director has also changed her approach as an actor.

Angelina added: ‘In highly technical terms, I am more aware of what the director needs, and what other challenges they face, and how many different pieces are moving …

“ Maybe when you’re younger and you have a huge day where you have to be cold and wet and emotional and cry, you think about those things …

Now that you’ve been directing and you’re older, and you realize that while you’re going to be freezing and crying, there’s also pyrotechnics going on, or several other situations. It pulls you out of yourself ‘.
