Andrew Yang is the top choice for New York City Mayor among the major voting groups

New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Yang is the first choice among a crucial group of voters – registered Democrats aged 50 and over, according to a poll released Sunday.

The poll, by the Siena College Research Institute and senior group AARP, found that 24% of Democrats in the age bracket say the former presidential candidate and tech entrepreneur is their first choice in the June 22 Democratic primaries. This year’s mayoral primary is the first to receive votes in order of choice, allowing voters to rank as many as five candidates.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer, who are also mayors in the Democratic primaries, were each the first choice for 13% of Democrats 50 and older, according to the poll.

Democratic candidate Ray McGuire, former vice-president at Citigroup, got 9% of the first-choice votes from Democrats in this age bracket, and candidate Maya Wiley, a Democratic candidate and former legal counsel to Mayor Bill de Blasio, had 7%, the poll showed.

Of the Democrats surveyed, 26% were still undecided. 44% of Republican voters were undecided.
