President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he will try to reach an agreement on migration with President Joe Biden so that Mexicans can legally work in the United States and ensure that the staff of fellow countrymen is very important to the commercial economic development of North America
“I don’t want to hurt vulnerabilities, but the spark plug for North America’s development is Mexico, for several reasons, and one of them is the quality of its workforce, the Mexican workers, its strength, its youth,” he said.
During the review of the guaranteed price program in Zacatecas, the president recalled that he will have a virtual meeting with Biden next Monday, during which he will discuss the importance of Mexicans in the United States.
He will try to get the US president to recognize the importance of the Mexican workforce in growing and producing, which in turn will influence decisions about migration. “We can better organize the flow of migration, legalize it and protect human rights,” he said.
“According to my accounts, the US economy will need between 600,000 and 800,000 Mexican workers a year, but it doesn’t, despite robotization and technological advancements. It is better if we reach a good agreement.
“If you don’t have a Mexican workforce, how do you guarantee an increase in production in the United States? We therefore propose an agreementthe most important, the fundamental, is of course that we develop ourselves, ”he said.
López Obrador compared the Mexican bracero program promoted in the 1940s to Mexican workers who worked in the fields of the United States while the Americans went to war during World War II.
However, the Chief Executive stressed that his government will continue to operate to address the main causes of migration and prevent citizens from having to leave their homes, their families and their culture, “that Mexicans can work and be happy where they were born,” he said.
