Amazon on Tuesday unveiled plans for the next phase of its Virginia headquarters redevelopment, featuring a signature 107-meter helix-shaped office tower that can be climbed from the outside like a mountain hike.
The striking helix building is the centerpiece of the proposal, which also includes multiple 22-story office buildings in addition to those already under construction as the company aims to house 25,000 new workers in the Arlington County neighborhoods across the Potomac River in the coming years . from the country’s capital.
The Seattle-based company said in a blog post that the building is designed to help people connect with nature.
“The natural beauty of a double helix can be seen all over the world, from the geometry of our own DNA to the elemental shape of galaxies, weather patterns, pinecones and seashells,” the company said. “The Helix at our Arlington headquarters will provide a variety of alternative working environments for Amazon employees amid lush gardens and flowering trees native to the region.”
AMAZON CEO JEFF BEZOS CAN GET OFF WITHOUT GETTING AWAY
Sketches show trees and greenery spiraling along the outside of the building, which in addition to a helix also resembles a Christmas tree or a soft-serve ice cream cone. Less flattering social media comments compared it to a poo emoji.
The company said it will open the outer mountaintop to the public on weekend trips.

The building itself is considered by the company to be an “alternative workspace” as opposed to the more traditional office space in the three 22-story buildings that will encircle the helix, which will be slightly higher than the other three buildings.
Since skyscrapers are banned in the District of Columbia and the Amazon buildings will be among the tallest in Arlington County, the helix will dominate the region’s skyline from some vantage points like no other building than the Washington Monument.

In a statement, Matt de Ferranti, chairman of the Arlington County Board, called the helix design “interesting” and said county residents would have the opportunity to comment on the design before it is approved.
