NY – Amazon bought eleven aircraft from airlines Delta and WestJet expand its fleet and get products to consumers faster.
On its blog, the company reported on Tuesday that it is the first time it has purchased aircraft for its shipping network. Amazon has rented planes for this for the past two years.
“Having a combination of leased and owned aircraft allows us to better manage our operations,” said Sarah Rhoads, vice president of Amazon Global Air.
The company tries to ship its own packages and relies less on the postal service or shipping companies such as UPS. In addition to its fleet of aircraft, the company has airport distribution centers, built warehouses near residential areas, and started a program where third parties can ship their products using vans painted with the Amazon logo.
The 11 aircraft, all Boeing 767-300s, will be retrofitted to carry cargo rather than passengers, the company said.
The four WestJet that will buy from him will be added to the corporate fleet this year and the seven from Delta will be added next year. In total, the company will have 85 aircraft by 2022.
Amazon.com Inc. declined to disclose how much it paid for the plane.
