Alternate candidates can request a vote | News from El Salvador

The pandemic has changed the parties’ usual campaign start, as until Saturday only ARENA and GANA had announced symbolic events ahead of the start.

By law, candidates for deputies can start their election campaign two months before the election, which has been cleared by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) since this Sunday, so that the candidates can request the vote and reveal their platforms.

Due to the health situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was not clear to the parties early last week whether they would hold events to start their campaigns. Many of the applicants consulted waited for directions or were thinking about running the campaigns through social networks or in person.

The TSE announced that aspiring lawmakers should develop their election campaign from December 27 to February 24, 2021 in the light of the election.

Until Saturday evening, only ARENA and GANA had called for the opening of campaigns for delegates.

GANA called at 10 a.m. at the headquarters in San Salvador on the sixth tenth in the Flor Blanca neighborhood.

ARENA, in turn, has put out a call for this Sunday at 6:00 pm in San Salvador’s Bicentennial Park.

The Supreme Court magistrate Guillermo Wellman this week urged to uphold the distance measures, not the crowd and the use of a mask and alcohol gel if the parties were to host conversion events. He also indicated that it is best to ask the vote via social networks.
