Alabama Crimson Tide WR DeVonta Smith breaks three SEC records in the CFP National Championship

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. Alabama recipient DeVonta Smith has set three SEC records before halftime of the College Football Playoff National Championship Monday night against Ohio state.

The Heisman Trophy winner started by breaking the SEC record for receiving yards on the evening’s opening run. His reception for 15 meters took him past Jordan Matthews, who set the record of 3,759 meters at Vanderbilt from 2010-13.

Smith also set SEC reception and touchdown records for one season. He caught his 21st touchdown on a 5-yard reception in the second quarter, breaking a tie with LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase, who set the tone last season.

Smith also broke Chase’s record for receiving one season later in the second quarter, going past 1,781 yards on the season.
