Agriculture Minister says thousands of workers are needed on farms

The secretary of the department Agriculture of Puerto Rico, Ramón González said today that it takes thousands of people to work the land in Puerto Rico.

“It would take thousands to develop Puerto Rico’s agricultural capacity. That’s the question, but not even hundreds are being reached,” González said in an interview with Jugando Pelota Dura.

González discussed the issue of Mexican workers coming to a farm in Guánica to save the lost crop, making sure that this is the scenario that will be repeated across the island.

“On all the farms, the dairies, have huge problems getting labor,” he added.

For the secretary, it is a work culture problem, and he wondered if it was due to low pay.

“$ 7.25 an hour in agriculture is a higher paying job than a government employee who earns $ 1500,” he said.

González concluded that the arrival of these Mexican workers will cause Puerto Rican workers who are “doing nothing” today to take to the streets.
