Activision is doubling down on hacker extermination

Warzone has reiterated its promises to players to overcome the game’s hacking problems and make significant “improvements” to the anti-cheat system.

The first year of Warzone was a complete success, with millions of players around the world diving into Verdansk and enjoying CoD’s second attempt at a battle royale, after Black Ops 4’s Blackout.

However, certain aspects of the game have become common targets for criticism. The power of skill-based matchmaking and hacker prominence in games of all skill levels are incredibly frustrating to fans.

However, what has exacerbated both problems is the lack of a tangible response from Activision. Players are incredibly frustrated with the silence of the multi-billion dollar company, which they believe has more than enough resources to fix the cheat problem and implement a robust anti-cheat system.

Since its release in March 2020, more than 75 million players have enjoyed Warzone.

While there still hasn’t been a major public announcement – from a Twitter account or a senior employee – an in-game daily message originally from April has resurfaced and been shown to players again.

The message, flagged by Redditor ‘SSMKh’, is titled “Cheaters Not Welcome”. The player’s own caption “Are you sure about this Activision?” tells us a lot about the skepticism and frustration among the community.

“We are working aggressively to keep Warzone fun and fair,” says the in-game communication. “24/7 security monitoring, ALL possible cheats, hacks reviewed, planned improvements to in-game cheat reporting, more than 50,000 global perma bans to date, more updates coming soon.”

The post is originally from April 2020, but appears to be showing to players in-game in January 2021. It somewhat explains why the number of permabans mentioned in the post is so low. It is unclear whether posts of the day were specifically chosen or on some sort of automatic rotation.

With Activision’s inactivity already under the microscope, the rerun of a 7-month-old message seems all the more bizarre. We would like to think that the number of permabans is now much higher, especially given the incredible amount of people who have invaded Verdansk.

The reformulation of the upcoming improvements is welcome, but the skeptical response makes it clear that many think the issue has already gotten out of hand and that it should have taken far too long.
