This is what the review of Los Llanos Orientales looks like on the NYT website.

A new destination to discover

Instead of its traditional annual list, the news outlet asked its readers to send messages about the places that delighted and inspired them in 2020. The aim was to inspire travelers around the world in a particularly difficult year for the tourism industry.

The Los Llanos region has been described as a point in Colombia worth exploring far beyond the traditional destinations such as Cartagena or Bogotá.

Los Llanos is home to an appealing combination of pristine biodiversity and traditional livestock culture that has seemingly been lost over time. Anacondas, howler monkeys, capybaras and crocodiles live together with ranchers, farmers and thousands of head of cattle, ”says Samuel Dulik.

Located in La Libertad, the Huanchaco resort in Peru was known for its excellent beaches for surfing and the local living culture, embodied by fishermen and their reed horses.

Asunción, the capital of Paraguay, was also recommended for the friendliness and warmth it offers. “Backpackers tend to skip it because of the flashy neighbors. But to me, travel isn’t about taking pictures of famous things: it’s about people, ”wrote Abigail Williamson, author of the text.
