According to experts, food and food packaging is unlikely to spread Covid-19

“Consumers need to be assured that, based on our understanding of currently available reliable scientific information and supported by an overwhelming international scientific consensus, we continue to believe that the food they eat and the food packaging they come into contact with is highly unlikely. , SARS-CoV-2 is spreading, ”the FDA wrote in a statement.

The three authorities said they wanted to highlight the lack of credible evidence to suggest that food or its packaging is linked to the transmission of the virus.

Covid-19 is a person-to-person respiratory disease, unlike food-borne viruses that can make people sick from contaminated food, the FDA said.

“ Given that the number of virus particles that could theoretically be picked up by touching a surface would be very small and the amount required for infection by oral inhalation would be very high, the likelihood of infection by touching a surface is very high. the surface area of food packaging or eating food is considered to be extremely low, “he added.

“Given the more than 100 million cases of COVID-19, we have seen no epidemiological evidence of food or food packaging as the source of SARS-CoV-2 transmission to humans.”

Chinese officials have repeatedly pointed out the possibility of the virus being spread by packaged frozen foods, but the CDC and the World Health Organization have both said this is highly unlikely.
