President Luis Abinader caused a stir in the country last weekend by favoring the three causes that make the interruption of the pregnancy possible.
“I, like the majority of the population, not only in the Dominican Republic but in the world, disagree with free abortion, but I do think there must be grounds to interrupt the pregnancy. That is the official position of our party (Modern Revolutionary, PRM) ”, the president said in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El País.
This statement immediately provoked disapproval from various sectors, including representatives of the Catholic and Evangelical Church.
A bill to reform the Criminal Code is currently under consideration by Congress that gives three reasons for interrupting the pregnancy: in the case of incest or rape, the risk of the mother’s life or that the fetus has a malformation incompatible with life.
