Abinader emphasizes actions to restore tourism

President Luis Abinader met with the Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Zurab Pololikashvili, at that body’s headquarters to coordinate policies aimed at continuing to restore the Dominican Republic’s tourism industry.

During the meeting, the Dominican head of state thanked the UNWTO for its support to restore tourism in our country. He appreciated the UNWTO’s commitment to accompanying other countries to design the best policies and build the confidence needed to restore tourism.

“Our real goal is the hundreds of thousands of men and women in the Dominican Republic who earn their living from tourism every day in a fair and dignified way,” said the president.

He also affirmed that the responsibility of the government he heads is the recovery of that sector and its people, whose income was cut by the pandemic caused by Covid-19.

During the meeting with Pololikashvili, who later offered him lunch, Abinader was joined by Dominican Minister of Foreign Affairs Roberto Álvarez and the director of ProDominicana, Biviana Riveiro.

At the end of this meeting, the governor unveiled a plaque, which, along with the Dominican shield, depicts the president’s visit to the World Tourism Organization headquarters on April 18, 2021.

President Abinader is on an official trip to Spain and will be received by the King Felipe VI of Spain and the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez.

Yesterday, the Dominican president met with former Spanish government presidents Felipe González and José María Aznar, where he was accompanied by the Dominican ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain, Juan Bolivar Díaz.

In addition, Abinader met with the Dominican community in Spain, whose representatives offered him a dinner in his honor, and he also met with a committee of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) on his agenda.

On his arrival at Adolfo Suárez Airport, President Abinader was received by a mission of the Spanish government and the ambassadors Juan Bolivar Díaz to Spain; Anibal de Castro for the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), and that of Spain, in the Dominican Republic, Alejandro Abellan.

The official visit of the Dominican president to Spain refers, among other things, to the XXVIII Ibero-American summit of heads of state and government, in which the Dominican Republic will assume the pro tempore presidency this year.

Abinader will arrive in Andorra tomorrow at noon, where he will be received by the authorities of this principality. The summit aims to unite criteria to face future pandemics and develop a programmatic agenda that will enable the strengthening of health systems, amid the major international meeting between countries in the region.

The meeting personally, and others virtually, brings together the leaders and ministers of 22 Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries.
