The president of the republic, Luis Abinader, announced on Thursday through multiple decrees the creation of 72 new cooperatives across the country.

In that document, the Presidency also confirmed that the purpose of this decree is to encourage economic development in areas related to the productive activity in the country.

The cooperatives included in the decrees represent a wide variety of commercial and productive activities, including agriculture, transport, banana and fruit producers, various services, saving and borrowing, production and jobs.

According to the statement, cooperatives are associations of people who voluntarily come together to form an organization that manages economic funds, after a prior agreement between their members.

These entities assist their members in the context of their social, economic and cultural ambitions.

The Dominican state has intervened in the proper management of cooperatives since 1963 through the Cooperative Development and Credit Institute (Idecoop).
