TAMPA, Fla. – New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he had a chat with Domingo German about his cryptic Instagram post the day he returned to the team after a domestic violence suspension.
“Everything is over,” German wrote in Spanish on Wednesday.
German deleted his messages, then wrote “I’m ready” in Spanish.
“Sure, we’ll pay attention to that,” Boone said Thursday. “When I first heard about it last night and saw it and it was brought to my attention, I was a little surprised and immediately worried, but I may feel a little out of context, a little over the top.
“And I feel comfortable that he is doing well and doing well and is ready to compete. But it’s something that we’ll keep looking at and try as best we can to make sure he’s in a good place. But I was talking about trying to be smart and picky about some of the things we express in public. “
German was 18-4 with a 4.03 ERA in 2019 when he was given administrative leave on September 19, while Major League Baseball investigated an alleged domestic violence incident involving his girlfriend, with whom he has at least one child. He missed the last nine games of the 2019 regular season and all nine postseason-games in New York.
He was suspended for 81 games on January 2 last year, a suspension that had 63 games left. He missed the entire 2020 season and the playoffs.
Yankees-reliever Zack Britton declined to say whether German should talk to teammates about what had happened.
That’s a tough question. I don’t think he owes me anything, ”Britton said. “I think it’s things off the field that he has to take care of. I think sometimes you can’t determine who your teammates are. I mean, that’s the situation. I don’t agree with what he did. I think that it has no place in the game or off the field at all… I think he will have to do that alone and make better choices in the future. ”
