A TikTok from someone rinsing ground beef is going viral

We all have little cooking hacks that make our meals ‘healthier’. Maybe you fortify your rice with cauliflower rice or swap sour cream for Greek yogurt. You go! But some tips go a little too far and make what could be delicious and eating healthy to something barely edible, as one TikTok user learned the hard way. This week, a video showing a woman rinsing cooked ground beef went viral for obvious reasons.

TikTok user Emily Harper’s video begins with her promise to teach you a healthy cooking hack she believes she learned in her nutrition class. It all starts well with cooking and then preparing to drain the ground beef (something we’ve probably all done a million times already), but then it’s HAYWIRE. She pours the beef into a strainer over the sink and starts rinsing it for a while. All that delicious fat literally goes down the drain.

“All this fat is disgusting,” she wrote in the post. “So get rid of it!”

There are of course a few problems with this. First, you shouldn’t be pouring grease into your sink !! It can harden and gum up the pipes (she has since added in subsequent videos that she doesn’t do it that often!). I personally pour it into a cup and throw it in the trash once it cools down, but people have all kinds of methods they swear by. But what people really struggled with was, of course, that letting it dry AND rinsing your ground beef makes it dry. It will take away all that great taste and fat that not only taste great, but can help keep you full.

She has since disabled comments on the TikTok, but not before it was shared all over the internet, and was “duetted” by other creators as well, all of whom said much the same thing: a little fat is your friend !!!
