However, a coalition of six major utility companies has just announced that they want to make the great American road trip possible for EV drivers. The Electric Highway Coalition aims to create a seamless network of charging stations connecting the major highway systems from the Atlantic coast through the Midwest and South to the Gulf and Central Plains.
“The Edison Electric Institute estimates that there will be 18 million electric vehicles on US roads by 2030,” said a press release. “While many drivers recognize the benefits of driving an electric car, such as the convenience of cheap charging at home, some are concerned about the availability of charging stations during long car journeys.”
“Over the centuries, travelers have had to figure out how to get from point A to B. While the group has not presented an official map, it plans to create charging stations along major highway routes with easy access and amenities for travelers while they wait for a charge. The group plans to provide DC chargers that will allow the drivers to run at full power in just 20 to 30 minutes.
So after a few hundred miles on the road, you can take the family to a place reminiscent of a highway rest stop, where you can recharge while you eat a snack, use the toilet and stretch your legs a bit.
