Japanese developer French Bread recently unveiled a new entry in the fighting game series that has put it on the map: Melty BloodI know, I know, but stay with me. This is pretty cool and a big deal for people who live and breathe fighting games.

First, the gist of the matter: Melty Blood: Type Lumina will be released worldwide on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Switch later this yearIt will appear rollback netcode-a hugely important technology to make online fighting games snappy and responsive – and a new mechanic known as “Rapid Beats” that allow newcomers and veterans alike to perform big combos with a single button. A group of four recurring characters has been announced with a total of six more fighters slated for final release.

We haven't heard much about how Melty Blood: Type Lumina will play, but it sure looks nice.

Type Luminais, like previous games, based on Tsukihime, a popular visual novel franchise in Japanese circles. Melty Blood First came to prominence in 2002 and received several sequels and updates through 2011 Melty Blood Actress Again Current CodeIt has long been considered a hidden gem in the fighting game community and deserves respect for its fast paced gameplay, fantastic music, and the overall style without garnering the kind of audience you might see for a more traditionally popular series like street fighter or Mortal Kombat

That being said, Melty Blood has kept one of the more consistent scenes within the larger fighting game community. Some players often joke that they are so committed to the game yet treated as an afterthought by tournament organizers that they have to make do with the space they are given, even if it means playing outside of matches. For example, a classic tournament series known as Battle by the Gazebo was named after a public park landmark that was appropriated as a competitive venue. While the community largely believes that the joke has transformed from an engaging quality to an insult at the hands of non-Melty Blood players, it still stands as a testament to the scrappy, do-it-yourself nature of the scene.

Melty Blood has seen a bit of a resurgence in recent years thanks to French Bread’s newer fighting game franchise Under Night In-BirthBefore the pandemic made it impossible for participants to meet in person, the Climax of Night tournament series was the destination for both. Melty Blood and Under Night In-Birth competitors, and Under Night even found its way to the 2019 Evolution Championship Series. French Bread’s success with both Under Night In-Birth and licensed projects such as Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax probably gave it the space and money it took to run it Melty Blood franchise.

I don’t think anyone, even die hard, isn’t Melty Blood fans were expecting a new game to be on the horizon, let alone one to launch worldwide. It is impossible to say whether Type Lumina will live up to the high expectations of its predecessors, but its existence shows how quickly the presence of the fighting game genre has grown in just a few years. I’m super excited for veterans to finally get a new game to experiment with and for a new generation of players getting to know the Melty Blood eccentricities of the series. More fighting games is always a good thing!
