The 49ers have a terrible poker face.
We all see that they hate their hand. Everyone knows that they want to ditch Jimmy Garoppolo and trade for Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. That makes both movements difficult.
Let’s just say the 49ers get a great deal for Stafford – maybe the Lions will trade him in for a second round in 2021 and a second round in 2022 – and the 49ers are accepting the offer. In that case, what happens to the commercial value of Garoppolo?
It would disappear.
Suddenly, the 49ers would have two expensive veteran quarterbacks in their roster and they would go over the cap. A quarterback should go – any team would understand that. So teams would just wait for the 49ers to release Garoppolo. Forget offering the 49ers tow bars
And let’s just say the 49ers are getting a great deal for Garoppolo – maybe the Patriots will offer him their second round in 2021 – and the 49ers are accepting the offer. In that case, what happens to Stafford’s commercial value?
It would shoot up.
Suddenly, the 49ers wouldn’t have contracted quarterbacks – they’d be desperate for Stafford. And the lions would know that. So they can increase their asking price to a first round pick and a second round, or two first round picks. Who knows?
It seems to me that the 49ers should buy Stafford and unload Garoppolo at the same time. In the same deal.
I’m talking about a three-way trade.
The 49ers could send Jimmy Garoppolo to the Patriots or another team. And that team could send a second round pick to the Lions. The 49ers were able to send a second round pick to the Lions. And the Lions could send the 49ers Stafford.
Who would say no?
