Roma A giant sinkhole opened on Friday in a hospital parking lot in Naples, Italy, forced the temporary closure of a nearby COVID-19 recovery residence due to the disruption of services.
The event did not affect the Hospital del Mar and, according to the firefighters, there were apparently no injuries. Three cars sank into the sinkhole.
The local hospital district said it opened a 20-foot-deep, 2,000-square-foot-wide sinkhole at dawn. Fire Chief Ennio Aquilino told SkyTG 24 television that the cause of the implosion may have been groundwater infiltration as a result of recent heavy rains.
The six people who were rehabilitating in the residence were transferred to other facilities.
Regional governor, Vincenzo De Luca, said the residence will reopen in the coming days, once electricity and water services are restored.
