A gang of squirrels is terrorizing people in New York City – BGR

  • A Queens neighborhood in NYC is apparently a hot spot for squirrel attacks, with some residents getting into physical arguments with the animals.
  • Photos of a human / squirrel scuffle show snow drenched in blood.
  • The residents aren’t sure why the squirrels suddenly turned violent, but they try to avoid them until things change.

We are all more than a little stressed these days. That’s exactly what happens when the world is in the midst of a deadly pandemic that has changed everyone’s lives in so many ways. Perhaps our anxious, excited demeanor rubs off on Mother Nature, as it looks like squirrels have begun to attack people in NYC openly.

As CBS-affiliated WCBS-TV reports, squirrel attacks have taken place in a Queens neighborhood with amazing regularity, with multiple people claiming to have had physical arguments with the animals, sometimes resulting in serious injury.

Queens resident Micheline Frederick says a squirrel attacked her while standing on her own front slope. The animal apparently climbed up on her leg and started biting her. Frederick, who had bruises and cuts after the attack, said her fingers had been “chewed” by the squirrel and that he refused to let go. When the animal finally gave in, the ground was covered in blood.

“We’re struggling in the snow and there’s blood all over and my fingers are being chewed and it won’t come off,” Frederick told WCBS-TV. “In the end it just stopped and I was in a mess.”

And Frederick isn’t the only victim of the squirrel attacks. Other residents have spoken of the animals’ strange behavior, saying that they tried to climb on their legs several times and even jump out of a letterbox to attack. One resident said she was just walking up her driveway when a squirrel jumped on her and bit her arm. She managed to get the animal off her before it did additional damage.

It’s a very, very strange set of circumstances and while your first thought might be that the animals must be rabid, it’s worth noting that rabies in squirrels is quite rare. The animals may indeed be rabid, but they won’t know for sure until they can be caught. In the meantime, some of those bitten by the squirrels have been treated for rabies as a precaution.

The victims of the squirrel attacks hired a trapper to catch and move the animals, but at the time of the report, none of the squirrels had caught the bait. For now, the locals will just have to be extra careful when they see any of the critters or try to avoid them altogether. Maybe they will get a little more friendly when the year is over. After all, 2020 has been tough for all of us.
