If the combined price of the new iPad Pro models and Apple’s Magic Keyboard makes your eyes water, the Logitech Combo Touch may be an option worth considering if you’re willing to wait.
The version for the 11-inch model costs $ 199.99, compared to $ 299 for Apple’s Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro …
There’s an even bigger savings for the 12.9-inch version, which comes in at $ 229.99, up from $ 349 for the Apple model.
We noted in our review of the first-generation Combo Touch that it was a bit bulky, but Engadget says Logitech has managed to slim down the latest models.
Logitech has, predictably, released new versions of its Combo Touch keyboard case for Apple’s newly announced iPad Pros. The company introduced the accessory for the iPad 2019, iPad Air 2019 and iPad Pro 2017 last year, a few days before Apple rolled out iPadOS 13.4 with full mouse and trackpad support. With that software update, you could treat the tablet like a real laptop capable of multi-touch gestures for navigation, such as dragging and scrolling. With the Logitech Combo Touch, you can take full advantage of that opportunity.
Combo Touch for the third-generation 11-inch iPad Pro and the fifth-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro has a detachable keyboard that you can remove while sketching or reading. The company says the updated Combo Touch is thinner than its predecessor and has the largest trackpad it has ever made for a keyboard case. Because you can click anywhere to navigate, you have more surface to work with.
The case also has an open side, so you can keep an Apple Pencil on the iPad. And it connects to your tablet via the Smart Connector, so you don’t have to worry about the keyboard battery running out.
Logitech’s website says both models will be “available soon,” new models available for older iPads, but don’t get more specific than that. The company says it is more flexible than Apple’s Magic Keyboard by offering four modes.
Typing mode: Place the keyboard upright, pull out the kickstand, and you’re ready to type notes, emails, and more.
View mode: Detach the keyboard and pull out the kickstand to watch movies and videos.
Sketch mode: Fully extend the stand for the perfect angle to take handwritten notes and draw with Apple Pencil® or Logitech Crayon.
Reading mode: detach or reattach the keyboard with the keys turned inward to read books, articles and more.
Of course, if you’re happy with a Bluetooth connection to a keyboard powered by its own battery, there are many more options at a wide variety of prices.
