Tottenham Player Ratings: Gareth Bale and Son save the day when Ryan Mason starts with a win

Hugo lloris

Made an early double save by pushing out Salisu’s header, then flying superbly over his goal to stop Adams’ fierce follow-up. Went down to deny Walker-Peters after 12 minutes. Could not get close to Ings’s header from eight meters away. 7

Serge Aurier

Hit the ball by Ings in front of the Saints forward half hour. Improved in the second half with its defensive efforts, adding if not much. 6

Toby Alderweireld

A solid enough presence at the rear and handled much of what came his way. 7

Eric Dier

Made some good blocks and except for one dubious moment in the first half, the top and both center backs benefited from Ings’ departure. 7

Sergio Reguilon

Went left on numerous occasions and it was his perfect low ball that Son shot off just to take the effort out. Worked hard and won the penalty late for Son to take the winner. 7

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

A constant noisy presence, he tried to rank the troops. Made a number of significant interceptions, including one that stopped a hiatus from the Saints too late. 7

Tanguy Ndombele

A very quiet game for the Frenchman and he struggled to impress before being replaced by Winks. 5

Young Lo Celso

An early attempt curled far from the left post. What a sloppy play, but slightly improved as the second half progressed and a fine ball passed through Reguilon for the rejected Son ‘goal’. Replaced shortly after by Lamela. 5

Gareth Bale

Tried to make things happen with some nice details in and around the box, but often others weren’t on his wavelength. Cut inside and fired a shot at the goalkeeper early in the second half. He went even better with a nice curling finish on the hour after Lucas’s shot went his way. 7

Lucas Moura

Attempt to get the ball moving, but gave it away way too often. It was unfortunate that he was sidelined for Son’s barred attempt, as there’s no way McCarthy could save Son’s shot, regardless of the Brazilian’s position. A lot of effort, but so little quality. 5

Son Heung-min

I thought he had put Spurs ahead with a sharp finish in the second half, only for Lucas to obscure the goalkeeper’s view from an offside position. However, he got his goal with a controlled penalty with two minutes to go. By no means his best performance, but he did business when it mattered. 6
