“Sepsis is a serious disease that kills between 25 and 30 percent worldwide” – Tucumán Ministry of Health

This was stated by the head of the Critical Care Department of the intensive therapy at the Centro de Salud Hospital, Dr. Luis Guardia, who assured that this is one of the most common causes of hospitalization in intensive care, but that the causes are diverse as it can have multiple origins.

Septicemia is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body’s response to an infection causes damage to its own tissues. When infection-fighting processes are triggered in the body, they stop the organs from working properly. Septicemia can progress to septic shock. This is a significant drop in blood pressure that can lead to serious organ problems and death.

In this sense, the professional explained that any infection can cause septicemia. In case of an infection or wound that has not responded to treatment, a doctor should be consulted. “We need to focus on early diagnosis for early treatment. Signs or symptoms, such as confusion or rapid breathing, require emergency assistance ”.

He, in turn, said anyone with an infection can get sepsis. But there are certain people who are at higher risk, such as: adults over the age of 65; people with chronic conditions, such as diabetes, lung disease, cancer and kidney disease; among others people with a weakened immune system.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 31 million people have an episode of sepsis every year. Of these, about 6 million people die from sepsis. In low- and middle-income countries, the burden of sepsis is higher and it is one of the leading causes of maternal and neonatal death. Nevertheless, it is very difficult to estimate the burden of disease worldwide due to limitations in diagnosis and reporting.

Finally, the professional identified some of the symptoms of sepsis: fast heart rate and breathing; breathing difficulties; confusion or disorientation; extreme pain or discomfort; fever, chills, or feeling very cold; clammy or sweaty skin

“The most important thing is to get medical attention if you think you have sepsis or if your infection is not improving or getting worse. Making an early and comprehensive diagnosis will help correct and early treatment, ”he concluded.
