During her participation in the Free Dialogue, the versatile Nashla Bogaert talks about her most recent performance in the film Hotel Coppelia by filmmaker José María Cabral, and about other projects she is involved in.
The film production first came through HBO Max, Hulu and Amazon Prime, and received rave reviews.
During its online broadcast, the film was hacked and posted on websites. Frames and video clips of scenes in which she has an intimate relationship with one of the clients who go to the Hotel Coppelia brothel.

“Hotel Coppelia has marked my life and I am immensely grateful for the opportunity. We made this movie in 2018, after filming the documentary Isla de Plástico that José María and I made; I remember talking to him telling me the story and it fascinated me. I had the illusion that I could be a part of it throughout history, because of what it represents to women, because of the artistic tricks of communicating a subliminal message to the public ”.
The role of a prostitute did not get it in her first audition. He had to participate within a second to achieve it. But he went to great lengths to get it because he felt the character had great power and he felt he could carry it with the quality that the director desired.
“He became one of my most dedicated characters, I poured out all my intensity. I tried to approach Gloria’s character with the honesty and respect she deserved, trying to do justice to her history and her nature, ”he added.
Gloria’s vulnerability was what caught her attention when she first read the script, as in Hotel Coppelia she represents the person who witnesses everything that happens there.
I feel like Gloria was somehow always looking for love, looking for approval. With a life marked by the melancholy that was felt in all her steps, the insecurity dressed in vulnerability, which eventually became her greatest strength …, that was an emotional gift for me, Gloria taught me many things. Hotel Coppelia represents the country, a place where many military commandos met during the revolution of April 1965 ”.
Dominican actress Zoé Saldaña praised the performance of Nashla Bogaert and Lumy Lizardo, the latter in the shoes of the brothel matron. The commentary was a great encouragement to her and Bogaert praised the work of José María Cabral, who shows great maturity in the film.

When the nude photos got out, Nashla Bogaert’s name was popular on social media. Morbidity gripped the indignant as the images circulated through the various messaging tools.
Being in the shoes of Gloria, a Hotel Coppelia prostitute, wasn’t difficult when it came to the scenes unsuitable for minors.
“I believe that the body of the actor and actress is the instrument used to interpret the character. It is a conscious and courageous exercise on the part of the interpreters to loosen the moral ideals of the people and not inject them into the character. It’s an exercise in adulthood to play the character without the streaks of my own morality. I think nudes are absolutely justified if they tell some of the story, if they are not free, if they are edited under the elegance and artistic vision of the director, and you agree that they are necessary to explain something . I play a sex worker, sex is the most natural thing that can exist in Gloria’s story, that’s why it didn’t give me any impression in the creative process ”.
He was aware that the scenes would arouse surprise, curiosity and even rejection in some, but that didn’t affect him.
“I knew that eventually people with very basic minds would emphasize that, the sex scenes and some of the discoveries. But the positive assessment of those who have committed themselves to it has been truly overwhelming, it is people who need to see that. The truth is that this has not affected me ”.
